Pursuit of excellence

The best instructors in any field always remain students. .  Each year the PBIA hosts an instructor summit gathering the most respected and experienced instructors in the world.  2026 was extraordinary.  We spend the better part of a week exchanging teaching strategies, materials, techniques, and comparing notes.  I had the pleasure of chatting with guest speaker and Mosconi Cup coach Johan Ruysink during dinner, interacting with Dr. Dave, Bob Jewett, Jerry Briesath, Randy Goettlicher, and more top instructors than I can mention. We had a wonderful remote presentation from long time friend and colleague Mitja Gradisnik.  Mitja is a coach from Slovenia and one of the most successful European coaches to come along this generation.

I was able to learn some new cueing techniques from European snooker coach Nic Barrow, a professional player and coach to legends such as Ronnie O’Sullivan. I took a quick lesson from my friend Kim Young and in turn I was also able to share some teaching techniques with other instructors.

People are sometimes surprised to learn that the top instructors are also students of the game.  The process never ends.  We are always looking to improve teaching techniques and engage in the free flow of new ideas.  We all want to offer our students “Best Practices”, and Best Practices is an ever evolving standard.
